Warm weather means playground time!

watching: The Crown on Netflix and This is Us on NBC - both are SO GOOD.

eating: naan pizzas, BBQ chicken salads, and Mexican takeout that my mom brought over... yum!

saying: I wish we had gotten a bit more winter weather! Seems like spring is here to stay already, which is definitely good because outside time is awesome - we are loving spending time at the playground already! But I'm a winter baby and I do love my snow days, so I'm bummed that we got so little snow this year. Fingers crossed March brings one last blast of cold, but it doesn't look likely.

wearing: a new sweatshirt from Under Armour and my favorite Victoria Secret leggings, most of the time. Comfy clothes for life, y'all.

posting: lots on Instagram Stories and regular Instagram - it's definitely my favorite social media platform!

packing: baby clothes and gear! Here's how it goes: baby clothes / things that are outgrown or no longer used get piled up in our spare bedroom until they form a mountain higher than I am tall, and then when I can barely stand it any more, we take a weekend to pack it all away in plastic bins and put it up in the attic. This past weekend, my mom came to help with the current mountain, and we got a really good chunk of it packed up and stored. Whenever it comes time for baby #2, I'm pretty sure we won't need a THING. Yikes.

jonesing: truthfully, I've really wanted ice cream lately! Can't seem to pull the trigger at the grocery store, though, because none of the flavors seem juuuust right when I'm looking. I'm weird. It's fine.

texting: everyone, all the time. duh. Does anyone use their phone for phone calls anymore? I really don't!

reading: I have The Rosie Effect on my Overdrive app right now, and I'm reading The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto in paperback. Frankie Presto was one my mom passed on to me, and it's definitely outside my "norm," but I like it so far. It's narrated by "Music," which is weird and cool.

hearting: these banana mini-muffins from Siriously Delicious that I made last weekend - so yummy and the perfect little snack! (Until you eat like 12 of them... oops.)

doing: decorating, Christmas shopping, birthday shopping, birthday party planning... I am going to have a one-year-old in a few weeks!!! I am getting my very first taste of what it's like to have Christmas and two birthdays in the span of two weeks, and have a feeling life will always be a little crazy this time of year (as if it wasn't already)

enjoying: Christmas lights! Seriously, one of my very favorite parts of Christmas is twinkle lights - so I love it when we get our tree up and get a few strands up around the house. I like to keep the lights low and just enjoy the little sparkle lights in the evenings.

cooking: lots of comfort foods! We've had beef stew, spaghetti and meatballs, and macaroni and cheese in the last few weeks - heavy, satisfying meals as it starts to get colder. I am also preparing for my mom and I to have our annual cookie-baking day this Sunday - we are trying to tone it down a notch this year.... we'll see!

wrapping: nothing yet! Boxes and packages are piling up in a corner and not one thing is wrapped yet.

playing: holiday instrumental radio on Pandora. I adore the instrumental station - it's perfect for having on in the background of everyday life.

toasting: to America, and to my mom on her recent retirement! After about a million years teaching public school, she is done for good. I am so excited for her and her next adventures!

going: not to the beach! Womp, womp. Our family beach trip, normally scheduled for mid-July, isn't taking place until September this year, so we actually have a bunch of free summer weekends. It's a nice change of pace. And I might actually get my car inspection done before the last day of July this year ;)

smelling: new candles! Went to my linen closet to get a fresh one last week and discovered, horror of all horrors, I was out of anything that wasn't "Autumn Leaves" or "Fresh Snow." While I love those, they just weren't cutting it while it's 100 degrees and soupy with humidity outside. I placed a BBW order, and fresh scents arrived on my doorstep yesterday. I've got "Endless Weekend" and "Beautiful Day" calling my name.

wearing: a lot of yoga pants and leggings, per usual. If I don't have to wear "real" clothes, I'm not doing it.

wishlisting: is it too early for fall clothes? Last year, I was semi-to-super pregnant, and skipped all the fall fashions. I'm looking forward to some new items this year.

celebrating: my first Mother's Day! C keeps asking me what I want to do, but I don't really have a good answer. Some quality family downtime will be nice, and maybe I can sneak away for a pedicure... that certainly wouldn't be terrible.

reading: "The Distant Hours" by Kate Morton. I discovered this author when C bought me "The Lake House" for Valentine's Day. I liked her writing style very well, so sought out another of her books to read next. It's taking me a long time to work my way through (new mom = not much time for reading!) but I am enjoying it.

pondering: what mamas did before swings - I can't imagine life without ours! It's been a consistent "happy place" for the baby since day one.

sipping: lots of water, Mother's Milk tea, and blue Gatorade. The first two for obvious reasons, the last because I read online that it's also good for milk production. Seems kind of silly, but a little bit can't hurt!

going: to the lake at the end of the month! We have a wedding to attend that is closer to the lake house than our house, so we will stay there for the weekend. It will be the baby's third trip! We are loving exposing him to this fun aspect of our lives. There are so many memories to be made!

making: crockpot meals! All the meals I prepped before the baby came have REALLY come in handy, and it's so nice to be able to throw something in the crockpot once or twice a week and have dinner already taken care of.

wishlisting: some new work clothes. When I packed away my maternity clothes, I also cleaned out my closet of anything that was too old or just generally didn't fit well or make me feel good when I wore it, and that left me with surprisingly little in the work-wear department... Sigh.

cleaning: a little of everything. It's hard to get caught up, ever, with a baby around (shocker!) but we try to do a little here and there and keep up with things.

posting: more often, hopefully!

tasting: smoothies! I have been on a smoothie kick ever since having the baby, and have one almost every morning for breakfast. I include a scoop of Vega protein powder, and one smoothie holds me over til lunchtime (whenever that may be). Easy to make and easy to consume one-handed, which are basic requirements these days.

Don't you just wish you were curled up in there, enjoying that fire? I do!
[source]
wishing // honestly, that it would stop raining! It's been raining on and off and completely dreary around here since Sunday, and I'm over it. The only precipitation that should be allowed in December is snow.

remembering // uhh... not much. Pregnancy brain is in full force these days - it's completely normal for me to not be able to remember where I put something, why I walked into a room, how to write a "4" (yes, that really happened, and yes, C looked at me like I was crazy)... the list goes on.

wrapping // nothing yet, but the presents are starting to arrive! I ordered a few things from Amazon last week and picked up a few things over the weekend, so the pile of things to wrap is starting to form. Now, to find the wrapping paper I bought after Christmas last year...

baking // this weekend! My mom and I have our annual Christmas cookie baking day planned, and we are making our list of what to include. I know for sure there will be traditional sugar cookies - that recipe is a family tradition, and we can't have Christmas without them!

decorating // just a little this year. I can't bear the thought of the holidays without decorations, but I know I'm going to be a little busy when it comes time to "undecorate" in January, so I don't want to set myself up for failure too much. We are getting out a few of our favorite decorations, and leaving the rest for next year.

Five for Friday: Turkey Time

Happy Friday! We met with our pediatrician this morning and had my 34-week doctor's appointment, so we've already been out and about and busy. Conveniently, that meant a pit stop at Sheetz for a pumpkin pie latte... doesn't take much more than that to make me a happy girl! It's the little things in life, isn't it?

Thought I'd jot down a quick Five for Friday today, since it's been a little quiet around here other than my weekly posts. Lots going on in life these days, and blogging always falls a little behind when that happens. Oh well. Let's see....

1 // I am firmly in the "Thanksgiving before Christmas" camp and you will not see any Christmas decorations around my house until after T-Day. That said, I have secretly been listening to the Holiday Jazz Pandora station when I'm home alone - it's just such nice background music!! It makes me happy. A little holiday jazz here and there doesn't hurt anything.

2 // Speaking of T-Day, we are hosting this year, and bought a 22-pound turkey last weekend. That sucker is huge! We are going to have a pretty full house, and my mom and C are doing all the cooking while I sit on the couch and eat pie. Joking, but... not exactly. It's going to be low-key (I'm talking buffet-style with paper plates) but everyone seems to be okay with that. As much as I love a fancy holiday dinner, there's something nice about just being able to be simple and comfortable with loved ones, too.

3 // There is a cold front coming through (those of you with snow know this already!) and we are going to have lows down in the 20s later this weekend. I am super excited for it to actually get cold and wintery - the random 70-degree days are making it impossible to dress each day and also causing my porch pumpkins to rot. Bleh. Apart from not currently having a coat that actually fits, I am ready for cold weather. I recognize that I am probably in the minority. Oh well.

4 // We are venturing to hell Ikea tonight in search of one more piece of furniture for the nursery. Wish us luck. People go in there and never get out, I'm pretty sure...

5 // Speaking of the nursery, I'm pretty sure we are just about ready for baby! (That is a scary thought.) We don't have everything we need, but we have all basics now, and are at a point where we could bring him home and have everything to survive for a while. The nursery is thisclose to being done - I love how it has turned out, and can't wait to share some pictures!

Happy weekending! Hope you have a great one, and get everything ready for Thanksgiving that you need to. I know I'll be cleaning like crazy and doing some last-minute grocery shopping. Wish me luck!

The view from atop the mountain while visiting Monticello
cooking: I haven't been making much lately - thank goodness for a husband who cooks and a the crock-pot! I did make an awesome dinner last night, though: meatloaf (a good one, not a blah one), mashed potatoes, and roasted broccoli. Totally hit the spot!

planning: Thanksgiving! We are hosting a very low-key event this year - I pretty much said, I'm not leaving the house, and anyone who wants to is welcome to come over. We are going to end up with a good-sized group of family members, and my mom and C are going to do the cooking. It's time to start thinking menus!

smelling: "Flannel" and "Pumpkin Pie" from Bath & Body Works - currently burning all day, every day, in our house!

appreciating: my healthy and relatively-easy pregnancy. It is cumbersome and I feel like a hippo most days, but there is nothing truly wrong. I have several friends who have not been so lucky during pregnancy, and so I am grateful for nothing to complain about!

anticipating: the holidays! Halloween - Christmas / my birthday is always my favorite time of year, and this year there is an obvious added layer of excitement because somewhere towards the end of that we will get a baby, too!

Five for Friday: It's Hallo-Weekend!

Today's Five for Friday is essentially five thoughts I couldn't flesh into full blog posts... sorry 'bout it! The brain is a weird thing, and a pregnant brain is even weirder. I have been having the craziest dreams, suffering from a complete inability to remember things 2 seconds past my initial thought, and making the weirdest connections in my mind when I see / hear other things. I've been hearing more and more that these "symptoms" just get worse once the baby is born... oh boy.

Anyway. Happy Hallo-weekend! I was thinking the other day about how great it was to have Halloween on a Friday or Saturday in college - it meant AT LEAST 4 days of partying, if not more! And then I shuddered to think about all the skantily-clad little co-eds wandering around Blacksburg in the cold... life sure has changed for me, hasn't it?? My big, exciting plans for tomorrow? Order Chinese take-out (our traditional Halloween dinner, of course) and sit on the porch to pass out candy to the kiddos. I'm actually really excited about it. Last Halloween, we had over 100 trick-or-treaters, and it was a school night! Can't wait to see how many we get on a Saturday! (It better be a million, or I am going to have a ridiculous amount of candy to eat on Sunday...) What are you doing to celebrate?

Okay, let's see here. Let's talk Five for Friday!

1 // Books. Do you use Goodreads? I kind of love it for keeping track of what I'm reading, what I've read, and getting recommendations for books from friends. I have a "shelf" titled "Did Not Finish," which is for books I just could. not. get. through. This is a rare occurrence, and there are not many books housed there. A new one was added this week, though: The One and Only by Emily Giffin.

Guys. I couldn't. A co-worker recommended it, and it was available at the library so I went with it. I shouldn't have. I was SO skeeved out by the creepy plot line that I actually just gave up. I have friends who rated this book FIVE STARS... I am seriously questioning your judgement, and side-eyeing the heck out of you. Sorry.

2 // Last night was the second and final meeting our of "Labor Basics" class at the hospital. What an eye-opening experience. Whew. Like I said before, I thought I knew about giving birth, but really I did not. However, I went into this far more educated than some of my classmates... I am nervous for the children they are going to bring into this world. Sigh.

We also took a tour of the Labor & Delivery Ward, and it got me pretty excited for the Big Event. The hospital we are delivering at is relatively new, and it's beautiful, and the L&D area looks amazing. That is definitely a good thing!

3 // Have you ever seen the show Beat Bobby Flay on Food Network? I don't generally watch it, but it's been on twice in the last few days when I was flipping channels. Here's the gist: two professional chefs battle each other for the chance to battle Bobby, then whoever wins the first competition challenges Bobby to cook his or her "signature" item, which they are supposedly really great at cooking. I have now remembered why I don't watch it: it infuriates me. Bobby never loses. Never!!!! I get it, he's good. But is he really, truly, that good, that in a blind taste test against another professional chef, he never loses? Ugh.

4 // Is there a worse flavor of yogurt than blueberry? I think not.

5 // When all else fails, cats.

I worked from home several days this week (the BEST because it does not require real clothes, which are a nightmare these days) and Toby insists on helping all. day. long. He just really wants to be by his humans and involved in what they are doing, which is precious, but seriously? It's hard to work with a cat standing on your laptop. I spend a significant amount of time removing him from my bubble.

Have a great Friday and a happy Halloween, and don't forget to turn back your clocks on Sunday!! See you in November (!!).

The most over-blogged image / quote of all time, probably.

eating: all the comfort food, carbs, and sweets. I'm trying really hard to maintain control as my pregnancy progresses but the only things that sound enticing are not healthy things, believe you me.

exploring: fall activities near our house - we are looking for a good pumpkin patch to get some outdoor decorations

wearing: I don't want to talk about it. It's not cute new fall clothes, that's for sure.

admiring: everyone else's cute fall clothes! At least my boots still fit.

collecting: ideas for nursery decorations. We are just about ready to start putting things on the walls and getting some cute decorations, and I'm a little intimidated!

WIAW: Pregnancy Edition

It has been a seriously long time since I've done a WIAW post - they are always fun (for me. for you?), but to be honest, I generally think about doing one in the morning, take a picture of my breakfast, and then completely forget about the idea for the rest of the day. Not so great for blogging. Oops.

I actually followed through all day yesterday, and documented a day's worth of eats. It's nothing overly exciting, but it is a good representation of how and what I'm eating at this stage of pregnancy. I have reached a very sad point: my stomach just really can't hold the amount of food that it's used to, and my eyes are always bigger than my stomach these days. I'm having to do a little adjusting to incorporate more smaller "meals" throughout the day rather than trying to eat "three squares." And I'm always walking a fine line between hungry and overly stuffed. Awesome!

Anyway. Let's take a peek at the day!

Breakfast

The usual these days - yogurt and granola, with my first giant water bottle of the day. I've switched to Activia in an effort to keep things, ahem, moving. Pregnancy problems. Awk-ward.

Morning snack

Snacks are a pregnant lady's best friend. I travel with a lot of food these days, especially when I leave the house for work and know I'll be gone for 12 hours. It is always better to have food and not need it, than need it and not have it. I have learned that one from experience.

We had a small celebration for a co-worker who won an award, and there were several boxes of doughnuts calling my name. I managed to stick with half an Entenmann's pumpkin doughnut and some fruit. The doughnut was exactly as good as I imagined it to be.

The banana and PB is what I packed myself for my morning snack, but ended up not eating thanks to the treats. I love those little Jif Natural to-go cups, but they are really hard to find in stores! The only place I can get them is Target - not Wegmans, not Food Lion, not BJs. I stocked up last time I found them.

Lunch

I was starving at lunch time, and really glad I had brought an extra-large serving of leftover spaghetti and meatballs. I packed the rest of the pan into that container and thought it seemed like a bit much, but by the time I had lunch, I was ready for it. I ate slowly, and cleaned my plate.

Afternoon snack

It was pouring rain when I got home from work yesterday, and nothing sounded more appealing that a cup of hot chocolate. I made it with 1% milk and added some mini marshmallows. Because duh.

A few handfuls of yogurt-covered raisins accompanied my hot chocolate... I got these at Trader Joe's last week and could probably eat the whole box in one sitting. It's taking major self restraint to not demolish them.

Dinner

I was on single-girl dinner duty last night, and nothing sounded appealing - that is happening more often lately. I reach the end of the day, and food just doesn't sound good anymore, plus I'm usually still full from whatever else I've eaten all day. But, if I don't eat anything, I wake up hungry in the middle of the night. Like actual stomach-growling hunger. Best to avoid that.

I went with an apple and some Trader Joe's Collier Welsh cheddar cheese. It was just enough to keep the stomach grumbles at bay, and light enough that I didn't end up feeling ill afterwards. I mixed a little apple juice into my water - that's a trick I use when plain water just starts to get old. A little juice usually helps out.

I told you it wasn't super exciting - but it's what life looks like these days! Although, if I'm being honest, there is usually a lot more chocolate involved. What can I say? The baby likes it. :)

Five for Friday: all the treats

We made it to Friday! Hooray! We have a low-key weekend at home ahead of us: I have a vacuum and a dust cloth calling my name. Not the most fun, but definitely needs to be attended to while I have the energy to do it. Feel free to hire me a cleaning service for my birthday in January. :)

In the spirit of loving Fridays, here are five things I am loving this week - enjoy!

1 // I've been on an organizing / de-cluttering kick (thank you, nesting instincts) and broke out my trusty label-maker... there is something so nice about everything having a place and being IN its place! Don't mind me, I'll be over here labeling anything and everything that sits still long enough.

2 // I had a serious hankering for cinnamon rolls, and I knew that if I didn't make my own, I'd likely be thoroughly disappointed in whichever ones I did eat (sorry, Pillsbury, but your "rolls" just wouldn't cut it this time). I did lots of research, and ending up settling on No-Yeast Required Cinnamon Rolls from Iowa Girl Eats - she has never let me down with a recipe yet, so I figured that would be a good place to start for my first time ever making sweet rolls! They turned out beautifully... and deliciously. I'm pretty sure a warm cinnamon roll with gooey cream cheese frosting is a treat sent straight from the heavens.

3 // the news is finally public and so I get to share my excitement! My college roommate is pregnant and due in March... we are going to be raising babies just months apart!! Fingers crossed that hers is a boy, too, and they can be best friends like their mamas.

4 // I made the most delicious coffee cake to feed to my co-workers this week: chocolate chip sour cream coffee cake from Smitten Kitchen. She totally snagged my interest with her Instagram picture, and I couldn't get that recipe out of my head. It turned out perfectly, and my team gobbled it down.

5 // Nothing like tea in fancy china cups to make you feel special on a random Thursday afternoon. My boss brought this tea set with her from Armenia, and all the dishes are stamped with "made in the USSR" on the bottom. She's going to give them to her daughter some day. Love it!

So there ya have it - a few happies to share on this gray Friday (we've got rain forecast all weekend - stay dry!). Anything fun happening in your world this weekend? If not, I have a few chores you could do for me... ha!

First things first... happiest of birthdays to my little sister! Hope you have a great day! xoxo

reading // after finishing Station Eleven, I've been in a bit of a book-funk - does that ever happen to you? Sometimes I just think story is so good that nothing sounds appealing as the next choice. But, I just checked out Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone from the library, so I think I'll give an old favorite a go for a while. PS: did you see J. K. Rowling's tweet yesterday about Harry's son starting school at Hogwarts?? So great.

making // I baked snickerdoodles on Sunday to take to work this week, and they were a huge hit - the entire batch was gone in one day! I did my fair share of helping out, but my co-workers had most of them :)

pinning // all things "baby boy nursery" - it's time to get started on the fun stuff!

anticipating // lots of fun activities in September: nursery work, lake time, all pumpkin everything... I'm so excited for the beginning of my favorite season! Now, if only it wasn't 90 degrees and disgusting outside today. Humph.

loving // hate to admit it, but I kind of love the Biebs's new song, What Do You Mean? I really can't stand him, but dang, that song is catchy. It'll get stuck in your head every time!

Five for Friday: the sad and the good

Five quick things, then we can all get on with our Friday. Before the fun stuff, though...

I would be remiss if I did not mention the tragedy that occurred on live news on Wednesday. I was horrified to see that two journalists were murdered, and saddened to see that it happened at Smith Mountain Lake. As many people know, my family has a house on SML, and we consider the lake to be a serene refuge from the "real world." Bridgewater Plaza, where the incident occurred, is a place that we have frequented over the years, and it broke my heart to see this tragedy unfold at a place that I consider one of my homes. It has been a sad week for the lake community, the news community, and the Hokie family, as one of the journalists was a VT grad. Keep them and the victims' families in your hearts, if you can.

Deep breath. OK. Let's do our five things!

1 // C made meatball pita sandwiches with homemade tzatziki on Tuesday night. I always kind of forget how much I love tzatziki, and then when I have it, I feel like I could drink a bowlful. Seriously. Garlic breath doesn't scare me. It's just so good. Try this recipe if you've never made it at home.

2 // We just bought tickets for a Hokie football game this fall, and I am beside myself with excitement. Can't wait to get "home" to Lane Stadium!! It will be baby's "first" football game (and possibly my first sober game... cough cough) and I know we will have a blast.

3 // In other baby news, a large package arrived on our doorstep earlier this week... we officially own a crib. Yikes. My in-laws were sweet enough to buy Baby W's bed for us, and while it's just going to sit boxed up for a while longer, I can't get over how intense that moment was when I realized that we have a crib in our house because a baby is coming.

4 // C is hosting his friends at our house this weekend for their fantasy football draft. It is intense and very, very serious, and I am very, very seriously vacating the premises for the weekend. I am planning to hightail it up to my parents' this weekend and spend some QT with them. It's my dad's birthday tomorrow, so I'm looking forward to celebrating, plus a few other fun activities with my mama. The boys will hopefully keep my house neat and tidy not destroyed, and I'll return home once the shenanigans are finished on Sunday.

5 // I've had some office requests for sweet treats lately, and it really has been a hot minute since I've brought any goodies in. May have to do some baking this weekend! Any suggestions for easily transportable favorites? I'm thinking brownies of some sort...

I told you this would be quick! What are your plans for this weekend? Send me your favorite baked goods recipe! Please :)

Five for Friday: We Have a Secret!

Happy, happy Friday! It is BEAUTIFUL out today, and it's supposed to be most of the weekend, too! Last night it was under 70* with low humidity - so unusual for August around here but I will take it!! Pre-season football was on TV and it was nice and cool outside... practically fall. Love!

I have been on a roll with Five for Friday posts lately... let's keep it going!

1 // Yesterday was a VERY exciting day... we had our 20-week anatomy scan, aka "we have a secret" day because we found out the sex of the baby! We are sharing with our families tomorrow, and then I'll be back next week to spill the beans here. Any guesses?? Our friends and family are split 50 / 50 it seems.

2 // We may or may not have gone directly from our ultrasound appointment to Target to buy baby clothes. I have been SO good so far and refrained from buying anything just because it's adorable - but I couldn't stand it any longer and had to make some purchases. We definitely had a few minutes of fun eyeing all the tiny clothes, knowing what is in our future!

3 // C and I were trying to decide what to do with ourselves this evening and were tossing a few ideas around - and then we remembered that we have a gift card to a local brewery! Score. Is there anything better than a dinner date with free dinner? Not to me. Ha!

4 // I have been on a Pintrest KICK lately - pin. all. the. things. I haven't had much desire to actually do much other than sit on the couch, thanks to the constant shoulder pain, but in my brain, I am cooking and baking and organizing and crafting. Ha!

Recent pins include football snacks, fall fashion, and this adorable wreath that I'd like someone to make for me. Any volunteers?

5 // We have been semi-binging on NCIS on Netflix this week. I always love the reruns when they are on TV, but realized that a) I have never really seen enough to understand the flowing story lines and b) all the seasons are on Netflix. Yahoo! Started from the beginning, now we.... here.

However, it always makes me insane when shows are based in the DC area but small details are totally incorrect. For example, NCIS HQ is at the Navy Yard in DC, but they can make it to Manassas in 15 minutes... on what planet?! I know, I know, it's just TV... but it really gets my goat. Totally unrealistic! Guess it might detract from the story a bit if they answered a call with "yep, be there in 2 hours because of rush hour traffic... sorry!"

[source]
Have a wonderful weekend, and I'll see you next week with a 20-week update and the big PINK or BLUE reveal!

The Lane Stadium Effect

Before college, I didn't really "get" football - I watched it, I knew about it, it was on in the background on Sundays, sure, but it wasn't really a big deal in our family. Neither of my parents had / has a strong allegiance to an NFL team, and when we moved to Virginia, my sister and I decided we were Dallas Cowboys fans out of pure stubbornness because everyone around us was a Washington Redskins fan. What can we say, we were in elementary school!

I chose to attend Virginia Tech for a multitude of reasons, but being a "football school" was not one of them. I knew little, if anything, about college football. I didn't know about the game, I didn't know the history, I didn't know about tailgating or traditions or superstition. My freshman year, I went to a couple of games, and they were fun, but I didn't really care. I had a long-distance boyfriend that I would have rather spent the weekend visiting with, and hadn't made a lot of friends or connections yet.

Sophomore year, though, I found a group of friends who really cared about football, and I joined a sorority, both of which totally changed my attitude about Hokie football (not just because of tailgating, promise, although that was an added benefit!).

My roommate, Michelle, and I
I finally figured out how much fun it was to experience a game, packed into the stands with a huge group of friends, proudly wearing your school colors and screaming your heart out, watching your team play hard and win (or lose). I learned about BeamerBall and the Lunch Pail Defense. I shook my keys on cue and lost my voice from cheering.

One of my favorite views of campus
After that, I'm pretty sure I never missed a game while I was in school, and some of my very favorite memories are were made in and around Lane Stadium. Words fail me here, because I don't think I can truly describe the experience - unless you've been there, you just won't get it. When you're in Lane, you're with 65,000 of your closest friends and it always feels like home.

Ten years after I started college (WHAT), I fully understand that there are weekends when you get up at the crack of dawn to tailgate (12 PM games are the devil). I don't think twice about face paint and noise makers and cornhole and grilling in parking lots. I faithfully wear my maroon and orange on game days and I know that my team will likely break my heart at least once a season. I planned my wedding around football season, and I don't make plans on Saturday afternoons (and the occasional Thursday night) in the fall (unless you want to watch the game). Hokie football means the world to me, and any time Enter Sandman comes on, no matter where I am, you better believe I am going to START JUMPING.

the best.

Five for Friday: Hashtag Me

This week has been painful.

Painful, you ask? Yes. Remember that pinched nerve I mentioned in my bump-date on Monday? Yeahhh, it's only gone downhill from there. I ended up at the chiropractor with an emergency appointment on Tuesday, and back again on Wednesday, for a couple intense rounds of adjustment and deep tissue massage. Not sure which hurts worse - the problems my back & shoulder, or having it fixed! My doctor informed me that my upper back is in state of "havoc" - what a word! Luckily, a full week after the initial pain started, I think that I am starting to feel a little better. I have been pretty miserable this week. Waaahhhh.

Anywho. A quick Five for Friday post for ya today - anything exciting happening in your world?? Tell me something good!

1 // Last weekend was girls' weekend, in Philadelphia this time. My two girlfriends and I spent the afternoon at a pop-up beer garden in front of the Rocky steps (San Pellegrino is refreshing but NOT the same), which I think is easily one of the coolest things about Philadelphia in the summer.

We then had an amazing dinner at Tinto. I took absolutely no pictures because it was super dark in the restaurant (maybe just poor lighting at our table? But I actually pulled out my phone to illuminate the menu better. #blindasabat). We ordered a wide array of tapas dishes, which is one of my absolute favorite ways to eat with friends. I think my favorites were the arugula salad and the Brussels sprouts. Yum! We rounded out the meal with shakes from Shake Shack - classy and fabulous. It was perfection.

2 // We have no plans this weekend for the first time in a solid month, and I am actually looking forward to the opportunity to organize and clean. Kinda sad how it gets to the point sometimes! I just get behind before I even have a chance to think about it in the summer. Sigh. #sendhelp #andacleaningcompany

3 // I've been burning a new candle this week: B&BW "Black Sands." It is delicious and a perfect reminder of our week at the beach. #takemeback (PS - just looked at the B&BW website and ALL THE FALL CANDLES ARE BACK. Yes, yes, yes. #nottooearly)

4 // With this shoulder / back issue going on, I have not been to the gym or worked out at all this week. However, I did buy a new workout top at Target on Tuesday. Does that count? #itwasonclearance #cantresistasale

5 // I had a Strawberry Poppyseed & Chicken Salad from Panera one night this week and it brought me an extreme amount of happiness. I have not been craving "fresh" food this pregnancy (#iwishionlywantedsalad #butireallyonlywanticecream) but that particular salad really hit the spot.

Have a great weekend!!

currently // august

Sunset in Rodanthe, NC - July 2015

creating // a nursery! Or at least thinking about it - we are getting to the point where we will have to start making some real decisions, at least as far as paint and flooring go.

wishlisting // a baby registry... does that count? Talk about an overwhelming process - how the heck do you know where to begin?

hoping // that everything goes perfectly during our 20-week appointment next Thursday, and we can get a clear scan to tell us the sex of the baby!

eating // um, everything. I go from not-hungry-at-all to omg-I'm-starving in seconds. Bring on the snacks!

watching // SYTYCD - my favorite summer show! I still haven't decided if I really like the Team Street vs. Team Stage format yet, and I definitely don't have a favorite dancer yet, but I am tuning in each week to see the performances and listen to the judges.

Five for Friday: Last Day of July!

Tomorrow is August, and that means we are THAT much closer to September and Fall! Hooray! C keeps telling me not to "wish away" these next couple of months, and I promise that I'm trying, but I am way over summer and ready for cooler weather and my favorite season. Sorry not sorry.

I was afraid this post-vacation week would drag by, but it actually went pretty quickly. Friday already, and another round of Five for Friday. Bring it on!

1. I am already seeing Fall clothing collections being released, and I get super excited before remembering, oh, right - maternity clothes. Buzz kill. Not that there are some cute things available for pregnant ladies, and not that I'm not excited for even more of an excuse to wear cozy, comfy sweaters and the like, but it's just not the same. Sigh.

2. I am desperate for a hair cut and color but trying really hard to stretch my highlights out a few more weeks. I just haven't loved my blonde as much this summer as I did last summer, and I'm ready to go back to all-over brunette, and get a couple inches taken off, too... but beauty is expensive, so I need to make the blonde wait just a little longer! Sigh again.

3. I had to get my state inspection done yesterday on my car (second to last day of the month, oops) and went to a new-to-me, family-owned shop near our house. They had me in and out in under and hour, didn't try to sell me anything other than my inspection, and actually took me into the garage to show me the one issue that the identified. How is that for a win!? I was so please. Fredericksburg friends, if you need a recommendation for an auto shop, let me know.

4. It's time for another girls' weekend! I am headed up to Philadelphia tomorrow morning for some much-needed time with my sweet girlfriends, and while there will be far less wine consumed this time (by me, anyway), I am still super excited! We have dinner reservations at a fun tapas restaurant, and I'm looking forward to catching up with the lay-dies.

5. Earlier this week, C made me a fried green tomato BLT for dinner... and it was possibly the best sandwich I've ever eaten. The man doesn't even LIKE tomatoes, but he is willing to put his hatred aside to create something delicious for me. I picked up some green tomatoes at the farmer's market before we left NC last Saturday, and he fried them up real quick with a cornmeal crust. It was ah-mazing. Those tomatoes, with a healthy schmear of mayo, crispy bacon, and fresh romaine? Perfection.

Tell me something good! Any exciting plans this weekend? How often do you get your hair cut / colored? What was the best thing you ate this week? I could probably eat five more of those BLTs and not be unhappy for a minute. Yum!
