Summer Reads: Short and Sweet Book Reviews

First things first - thank you so much for all the love regarding my last post. I tell you what - it has been really hard to blog about anything going on in my life without mentioning what seems to be the ONLY thing going on in my life. The last few months have been exciting and terrifying at the same time, and I can't believe how fast the weeks are flying by. December will be here before we know it!! Yikes.

Baby-talk aside, it's my intention to keep things business-as-usual around here. I will probably do some weekly pregnancy updates (although so far I haven't been that great at getting those pictures taken... it's more like an every other week thing. Oops.) and baby-related topics will inevitably come up, but I plan to keep things as random and normal as they always have been. Cool?

That said, I thought I'd share some recent reads today. Summer always seems to be the time when people are looking for a new book to pick up, so I've got a few on my list that I am highly recommending. These are great beach / pool / lake / weekend reads - so add them to your list and check them out the next time you need a great story!

All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr // this is, by far, the best book I've read in years. I have recommended it to everyone I know, and only one person has come back to tell me they didn't like it as much as I did! The story takes place during World War II, and follows the very different lives of two children as they grow up through the war, slowly winding their paths towards one another. The writing is absolutely gorgeous, and the setting, Nazi-occupied Paris, is a different take on the usual backdrop. I found the story enthralling, and while obviously WWII-related, about so much more than the war.

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes // A book club book that I failed to read in time for our meeting, this one was on the back burner until it finally became available at the library. I know everyone loves Jojo Moyes, but this was actually the first book of hers that I've read. The story is somewhat different than I expected when I first started reading - I expected a love story, and got one, but on different terms than I anticipated, and I found myself ugly-crying on the train on my way to work one day. Definitely get out your tissues for this one - it's a great easy read, but a tear-jerker!

My Name is Memory by Ann Brashares // This was a random find at the library, and I'm so glad I picked it up. The story is based on the idea that some people have what's called "the Memory," or the ability to remember all past lives, and follows the path of a young man who is always searching for his soulmate, no matter which life they are each in. It was just magical enough but not overly so, and I really enjoyed the parts where the book is set in Virginia - local always makes it a little more interesting. Beautiful story that had me wishing the book hadn't ended.

The Mapmaker's Children by Sarah McCoy* // I am a huge historical fiction fan, but this story was something new for me: Civil War, abolitionist-era America, following the story of John Brown's family - specifically, his oldest daughter, who has a gift for creating maps to help lead slaves to freedom. This is another book that jumps back and forth between stories, one set in the past and one set in the present, slowly weaving together two seemingly unrelated lives. It has a several twists that I wasn't expecting, and I thought that the story moved along at a good pace. Again, it was a semi-local setting, taking place around Harper's Ferry and other parts of West Virginia, so it was appealing to me in that regard. There are some characters that are easy to like, and some that are easy to dislike, which I always think is a sign of good writing. I found the dialogue a bit slow and unrealistic at times, but the rest of the story carried the book successfully. I liked it more than I thought I would, and found myself really wanting to get to the end to see what would happen. That's my kind of book!

*I received this book from Blogging for Books for this review. Get more information about the author and the story here!

Winter Reads: short & sweet book reviews

I get some of my very best book recommendations from other bloggers, so I like to spread the love and share details about what I've been reading, in case anyone else is looking for a good book to pick up.

I've just started a brand-new annual reading challenge on goodreads (be my friend!) - I really like logging each book I read and seeing my progress, as well as that of my friends. My goal for last year was to read 30 books, and I finished with a grand total of 33. Based on that, I've set a 2015 goal of 35 books. I finished my first on the plane home from Nashville, and I've already started the second. Wahoo!

To be honest, I kind of got burnt out on reading towards the end of the year, so the ones I'm sharing with you today are actually what I read in November, December, and the beginning of January. There were some real winners, though, so I hope you'll check them out!

To me, the best review is a short review - so I'll try to keep these simple!

The Double Bind// Chris Bohjalian has become one of my favorite authors, and I love the way he twists his stories multiple times throughout the book. This one, featuring a plot line where nothing is as it seems and the characters are not who you think they are, may very well be one of my favorites of his so far.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane// This book got tons of great reviews this year, but it wasn't what I was expecting at all. I'm not much of a fantasy reader, but this one held my interest, regardless of the monsters and madness happening in the story.

Help for the Haunted// I liked this book all the way up until the very end - the final "whodunnit" answer was not what I expected or what I wanted. The story moves back and forth in time, which is a style that I generally like, and also features several sub-plots that I found interesting. It made for a good plane read.

Beautiful Ruins// Another that received tons of great reviews this year - I didn't love, love it, but it was pretty good. Another that jumps from time to time and character to character, so I felt a little lost at times, but the characters are well-developed and very realistic (to me, anyway!). I really connected with the characters' flaws and hopes.

Yes Please// I cannot say enough good things about this book. I feel like I know Amy personally, and I feel like she gets me - she is hilarious and honest and real about her life, and I finished this book in one sitting (and it was a fabulous way to spend a Sunday)! Highly recommend.

So there ya have it. Next on my list is Big Little Lies - a book I have been dying to read because I really like everything Liane Moriarty has written, but haven't gotten around to doing yet. Oops! Time to start.

What are you reading right now? What is the best book you read in 2014? I think mine was Every Last One by Anna Quindlen - it shook me in a way that I haven't really recovered from yet, and I still think about it regularly. Not many books are like that for me!

oh hey friday!

I am actually somewhat shocked that today is Friday.... this week has FLOWN by! We had a big two-day meeting at work that we spent the first half of the week prepping for and the second half conducting, so the days just blurred together and next thing I know, we're done! Whew. Love weeks that go like that.

As if a quick week wasn't nice enough, I spent the evening with some girlfriends last night at Vivify, sitting on the rooftop sharing a pitcher of white sangria and listening to music. It was like a scene from a movie... until the wind kicked up and the lightening started! Yikes. An early end to girls' night... but still fun to get some time with some sweet ladies!

And now, without further adieu.... a quick Five for Friday! Here's some snapshots from this week.

1 // Add this to the list of #yardsurprises! My lilies started blooming this week - one whole side of the house is covered in these stunning pink flowers! They are as big as my whole hand, and smell amazing. What a treat!

2 // I whipped up a batch of these chocolate and peanut butter swirl brownies for a co-worker's birthday this week - SO GOOD. I will definitely put that recipe in my back pocket to make again! Everyone at work raved about them, and they were super easy to make. Another win for my girl, Betty Crocker.

3 // I love, love, love summer beers. We've been trying some news ones, and I am finding some new favorites! This one was the Sierra Nevada summer brew. Yum!

4 // Awkward selfie time - had to document the fact that I wore my big girl suits this week! You'll almost never find me in a suit... every day is NOT a job interview, my friends. However, the meetings we were conducting called for me to pull out the big guns. Proof that I can dress like an adult!

5 // Picked up a stack of books from the library this week - excited for some new reads! I have heard really good things about a couple of these, and a couple are random library finds. I had forgotten how much of a thrill I get from carrying a pile of books out of the library. Nerd alert. Don't care!

Have a great weekend!

Five for Friday: concerts, candles, and still coughing...

Happy Friday, friends! Hope you've had a great last week of June. I'm still battling this nasty cold... which has transformed itself into a lovely-sounding chest cough. Cute, right? Happy summer to me. I should probably just start investing in Mucinex - it's the only thing that seems to be helping at all!

Any-hoo. Thought I'd pop in for a quick, really random version of Five for Friday - it's been a while since I had a good one! Here's a few things that are on my mind today.

[source]

1 // I finally finished this book yesterday, and I'm so glad I did. I started reading it over a year ago, and found it fascinating but also very, very dense - not a light and easy read! I committed to finishing the second half of it this week, and it definitely picked up as it moved along. It is fascinating subject matter, and very well written. [sidenote: the Google just told me that a film adaptation could be in the works... ooooooh.] Looking forward to Erik Larson's next book on my list: The Devil in the White City, which I've heard is also amazing. Anyone read it?

[source]

2 // I took my first-ever BodyJam class at the gym last night, and let's just say that my moves did NOT look like those people in that picture above. BodyJam is a dance-based, Les Mills cardio class, which focuses on learning a couple of quick "routines" throughout the class. I really enjoyed it, but felt a smidge rusty when it came to my movements. The fact that I was ever a "real" dance is hilarious - you wouldn't have been able to tell if you saw me last night!

[source]
3 // Picked up this candle from Bath and Body Works this week, and I am obbbseessssseeddddd! I want to climb inside it and live there all summer. It smells amazing!

[source]

4 // We bought tickets to see Jennifer Nettles in concert later this summer, and the tickets came in the mail this week! I am SO EXCITED to see her live again - the Sugarland concert that C & I went to a couple summers ago was one of my favorites, ever. She is amazing - so talented, so funny, so beautiful. Looking forward to seeing her at a new-to-us venue, too - Richmond International Raceway Amphitheater. It's sure to be a great event!

5 // I am drawing a complete blank on a fifth thing... so I'm outta here! Happy weekend, friends - hope it's wonderful!

Five for Friday: links on links on links

It is Friday and it is a gorgeous day here - is there anything better?! Granted, I have to enjoy it from indoors because the pollen situation of out. of. control. per usual this time of year. I am starting to have itchy eyes and a runny nose, and that's WITH the allergy shots I get. Definite sign that it's pretty bad out there. I can't imagine how the rest of y'all are feeling!

Yup.

I hope you have a great weekend planned - it's the last one in April! About damn time, if you ask me... I'm ready for a new month. Anyone else?

Five for Friday is a quick one this time around - we've got things to do and places to be, my friends!

1 // Joy the Baker posted a recipe for Lemon Pound Cake with Lemon Poppy Seed Buttercream earlier this week and it is taking over my brain. I must make it. Luckily, my mama's birthday is right around the corner...

2 // Iowa Girl Eats posted a recipe today for Chipotle Cheddar Turkey Burgers with Avocado Crema and my head almost exploded. I want to jump into her pictures and live inside that meal. We will definitely be eating these this weekend!

3 // Speaking of this weekend, it would appear that I am running the Tarheel 10-Miler tomorrow. Ummm... what? Not sure what I was thinking when I signed up for that. Pray for me, please. I have a feeling it's going to be a personal battle. Yay, races!

4 // Our book club book for next month is The 19th Wife by David Ebershoff. Has anyone read it? I am currently ambivalent about it, having only read the descriptions - not sure if I will enjoy it or not. I haven't started it yet because I'm too busy reading Insurgent. It's next on my list, along with Night Film by Marisha Pessl.

5 // I just made a quick list of all the house projects / things to get done that I could think of, and there are about 30 items on the list. That's just off the top of my head, without really thinking about it. Does it ever all get done?! I'm pretty sure I know the answer to that one....

Enjoy your weekend! Hope you get some sunshine :)

So tell me...
  • What are you reading right now?
  • What is one recipe you've seen or tried lately that I must make?
  • What was the last race you ran?

Coffee Talk #3

I'm just going to put this out there: this is going to be one of those "let's get real" posts. Because it's all I have in me today - sorry not sorry. I'm going to put the Coffee Talk picture on here, but it's definitely wine talk, because caffeine will just not help on a day like today. Amirite?

  • I want to talk about how much I hate the weather but really I just so don't because I am so over it and every person ever is talking about it like they are the only ones experiencing it. Moving on. Spring starts March 21. Get me to that date, STAT.
  • I spent a large portion of my day listening to the new guy in the cube behind me talk to approximately 46 different people about how to "set up his phone" because right now it "belongs to someone else." Very effective use of time.
  • There are approximately 29 home projects that I would really like to do, but every one I think of leads to something else that needs to be done first (and more moolah that needs to appear out of thin air) and the solution to this is that I am doing none of the things. So whoever would like to give me a good 'ol fashioned kick in the rear to get started, I'd appreciate it.
  • Along the same vein, I am currently hunting for a tall, wide, not-too-deep table to put against one of the walls in the house. I have very specific measurements and a look I'm trying to go for, and I've looked at approximately 395 tables online and in HomeGoods, and none of them are the table. So frustrating. This is why I don't furniture shop. (Side note: we are doing a lot of approximating today.)
  • Last night, I finished reading Orange is the New Black. Much better than I expected it to be, and I actually want to start watching the show again now. On to the next book: I downloaded The Execution of Noa P. Singleton from the library and will start it today. Anyone read it?
  • I have very little patience for people who don't do their jobs. It is one of the most frustrating things in the world to me. I don't care if you hate your job or you think you're too good for your job or whatever - it is your job, so do it.
  • I need people to stop trying to sell me shit on Facebook. I do not want to buy Scentsy, Thirty-One bags, Tupperware, or magazines. Get off my timeline. People like that are ruining Facebook for people like me who just want to stalk people from the privacy of their own homes.
  • Make these peanut butter cookies and then thank me because they are so easy and so delicious. You're welcome.
That's all I've got, folks. Hope you're having a lovely Tuesday, and that it's warmer outside where you live. Because I am so over winter coats and snow boots!

Five for Friday: a jumble of things

Friday already?! Short weeks are the best. There was plenty to keep me busy the last few days, and I didn't take many pictures - so we will do the best we can for this week's Five for Friday. Use your imagination when necessary!

Just finished // Just starting
1 // I challenged myself to read 20 books this year, and I've already finished six! (Two I was halfway through when 2013 ended, but let's not focus on the details... haha!)

I just finished reading The Kindness of Strangers, by Katrina Kittle, which is Weird with a capital W but also SO. GOOD. I could not put it down. In fact, I spent last night finishing it instead of watching the Olympics or anything else on TV - I just couldn't save it for my train ride! The subject matter is incredibly emotional and awkward and horrifying, but the character development is incredible and the story is just haunting. It's not for the faint of heart, that's for sure.

Our next book club book is Orange is the New Black, by Piper Kerman, and I'm really looking forward to it. Obviously, this is all the rage right now, and I've seen several episodes of the show and liked them, but I'm happy to be reading the book before I get really into the show. And, from what I hear, it's a pretty easy read. That's always good!

2 // I finally got all my winter decorations and leftover Christmas stuff put away this week - I refuse to have anything snow-related in my house because I am over winter. I love winter, but it's time to move on.

3 // I received the J'Adore VoxBox in the mail this week, and I'm so excited to try out the goodies that came inside! I'm not sure how I feel about fake eyelashes, and getting C to use spray lotion is going to be a chore (ha), but the other items are definitely piquing my interest. Also, a whole gigantic bag of Hershey Kisses? Be still my heart. (see also: things I don't really need. sigh!)

(disclosure: I received all products complimentary from Influenster to review - opinions are my own!)

4 // Who doesn't love getting pictures of puppies first thing in the morning?? My sister sent me this picture of my Puppy Brother one morning this week when he refused to get out of bed.... so cute!

5 // I'm headed off to Philly tomorrow for some girl time! I'm looking forward to seeing two old friends and explore the City of Brotherly Love. The last few times I've been up have been for various events, and I haven't really had time for any sight-seeing. We are spending a few hours tomorrow touring the city, then have dinner reservations somewhere fun. Yay!

So tell me...
  • Any fun weekend plans?
  • Best book you've read lately? I'm always looking for recommendations!
  • Favorite city to visit for a weekend? I count almost anywhere in a 4-hour radius as "weekend worthy" and C & I love to take little trips.

Forced relaxation: time well spent

Today's Blogtember prompt: Review a book, place, or product.

When we moved, C and I added a good bit of time to our commute. We are getting settled into our new routine, and one of the things that both of us are actually liking is the extra time on the train in the afternoon. We have both been rediscovering our love of reading - me via free books from the library on my nook, and him via a few iTunes gift cards we found laying around, which he's using to buy books (for now).

We are taking advantage of the "forced relaxation" that the train ride provides, and I've been flying through books that have been on my reading list for (truly) years - which is partly embarrassing, because I haven't been reading, but partly exciting, because I finally am!

Here's what's been on my nook lately:

Tell the Wolves I'm Home by Carol Rifka Brunt
5 stars

This book was recommended to me by a dear friend, and I'm so glad I followed through and read it. It was such a touching story, and the author was able to create a deep connection for me with the characters. I'll admit - I found myself laying in bed in the middle of the night, tears running down my face, unable to put the book down until I finished it. There was so much awkwardness in this story, and it made me uncomfortable to read, but in the best kind of way. (Does that make sense?) It was the kind of writing that just sucked me in.

The Postmistress by Sarah Blake
3.5 stars

This is the book that has probably been on my "To Read" list the longest, and I was really excited to find it in the library. It was a very different take on World War II, which is my favorite historical-fiction subject, and I really liked the direction that Sarah Blake took the story. The writing was good, but I just didn't love the book like I wanted to. Mostly, I think the ending didn't do anything for me. I kept expecting something... else... to happen, and it just never did. Still a good read, though!

The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender
2 stars

I wanted to love this book. I really, really wanted to. I had such high hopes for it... but it fell flat for me. The premise of the story is awesome: a little girl can taste feelings in food; she can taste whatever the cook was feeling, or didn't know they were feeling. Sounds great, right?! And yet... it was awkward. The story got weird in the middle, the characters were hard to relate to, and there was just too much going on. I felt awkward while reading it. I was happy when it was over.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
4 stars

This book was recommended to me by several different people over the past year or so, and I finally got around to reading it. It was wonderful! An intense story, beautifully written, with incredible imagery and word choice. I truly enjoyed the writing in the book. As far as the story itself, it was a little hard to follow, as it jumps around in time a lot, but the characters were well-developed, and the plot moved along with a good pace. My only real issue with the book was that it went on just a little too long for me - there was a little too much "wrapping up" in the end, whereas I felt that it could have ended a few chapters sooner and left some mystery for the reader.

Have you read any of these books? What are you currently reading? Any recommendations for me? I've got lots of free time these days!

Five for Friday: odds & ends

A random assortment for this edition of Five for Friday
1 // I recently discovered that I can use my library card to check out eBooks from the local library & put them on my nook or iPad (totally behind the times). I am basically obsessed. I am using the longer commute time that we now have to catch up on the loooong list of books that I've been meaning to read, and it's been fantastic to get books for free! I just started this one, Tell the Wolves I'm Home, at the recommendation of a sweet friend. Technology is awesome!

2 // We took a quick trip to the lake last weekend - left all our still-packed boxes behind and got away for a few days. Even though it was overcast and / or raining the whole weekend, it was still relaxing and fun. We did get one picture Friday evening while the sun was out - so not a completely dreary time!

3 // I finally gathered up all the seashells I've collected on our OBX trips and "did something" with them. Old vases FTW. This is the beginning of the beach-themed bathroom upstairs, and peek at the quick paint job my mom and I did before we moved in!

4 // Little dude has been hanging out with my in the morning while I get ready for work - he spent Wednesday morning rolling around on the carpet in the bedroom and getting into some crazy antics. He is WAY more of a morning person cat than I am, that's for sure.

5 // I am using this new (to me) app / website a bit more to try to gather all my internet recipes in one place. It's actually pretty handy! I'm making these creamy chicken & jalapeno enchiladas from Bev Cooks for dinner tonight, and yesterday, when I got to the grocery store, it was easy to just open the ZipList app and see what I needed, without having to Google search for the recipe and try to remember where I found it. Just checked the recipes I'd stored, and crossed things off the list. I'm going to try to remember to save all my recipes there!

Happy weekend!

Page turners

Anyone who really knows me knows that I love to read - I have a voracious appetite for books, and am definitely one of those people who can lose myself in almost any story. As I've gotten older, I've found that I go back and forth between reading nothing for months at a time, and then reading everything I can get my hands on - just one of those ebbs and flows of life, I suppose. Lately, I've been on a reading spree, thanks to a random $10 Barnes and Noble gift card that I got in the mail. Normally, B&N coupons don't apply to nook books, which makes me sad, because I love reading on my nook. This one surprised me, though, and was good for anything! So I scooped up a book that's been on my "to read" list for quite a while, and followed that with another, and I've just now started my third book in three weeks. My brain is hungry! Here's a look at what I've been reading.

Amazon
 The Soldier's Wife
Margaret Leroy

One of my favorite genres is historical fiction, and I especially love anything set in the WWII era. This book followed the story of a soldier's wife, but rather than being set in Germany like many books are, it was set on an island off the coast of France. The imagery in this book was just fantastic - my mind's eye was over-flowing with the beautiful scenes of the island and the small village where the book takes place. The characters were easy to get into, and I enjoyed the time-progression: it moved smoothly through many years, without feeling like anything was left out. Great read!

Amazon
Blackberry Winter
Sarah Jio

My sorority's philanthropy is literacy, which is one of the things that attracted me to it in the first place, and in addition to encouraging and promoting literacy in children, they also do so among us members! Recently, Pi Phi launched a virtual book club called Pi Phi Pages, and this book is the first book on the list to read. I thought the book club sounded like fun, and the book sounded like a good read - so I added it to my nook. After the first chapter, I was hooked! This story featured the historical elements that I love, with a bit of mystery, and was just predictable enough that it was an easy read. However, there was a twist at the end that I wasn't exactly expecting, which I think is key to a great book! I finished this one in three days, and found myself really sympathetic for the main character. She was easy to relate to, even though I've never experienced what she had - the emotions portrayed by Sarah Jio are touching and realistic. I think this book set our book club off on just the right foot, and I can't wait to see what other readers had to say about it!
